Notes:- The Karla Caves are a complex of ancient Buddhist Indian rock-cut caves at Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. These caves were built during the Satvahana rule in India in 2nd and 3rd century BC. Karla Cave is the largest Hinayana Buddhist chaitya (temple) in India. These are protected under the Archaeological Survey of India.
- Kanheri caves are located near Mumbai. They were built during 2ndto 9th century AD. They belong to the Hinayana phase of Buddhist architecture.
- Jogeshwari caves were constructed during the second half of the 8th These are located in Salsette Island. They belong to the last stages of Mahayana Buddhism. Brahmanical shrines are also found here.
- Bhaja caves are located near Pune. They are believed to be excavated in 2ndcentury BC. It belongs to the Hinayana Buddhism sect in Maharashtra. These caves are notable for their indications of the awareness of wooden architecture. The carvings prove that tabla – a percussion instrument – was used in India for at least 2300 years.
