ITC Music Festival:
Sangeet Sammelans 2010 will be organised by the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) to promote Indian Classical Music from January 8 and will be held in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi.

National Road Safety Week
21st Road Safety Week is to be observed from 1st January to 7th January, 2010. The theme of the Road Safety Week this time is “Life is safe if driving is safe”.

10th Auto Expo:: New Delhi
A total of 2,105 participants, including 800 from overseas, will be taking part in the expo showcasing their products in 125,000 sq mt of area that is expected to attract nearly 20 lakh (2 million) visitors in New Delhi beginning from January 5, 2009.

People’s Welfare Day and Mayawati
Mayawati’s 54th Birthday is falling on January 15 and BSP decides to celebrate the day as ”people’s welfare day”

Awards & Recognitions:
US Postal Service stamp on Mother Teresa:
Nobel Prize winner Mother Teresa & legendary Hollywood actress Katharine Hepburn has been chosen by US Postal Service for 2010 stamp programme. The stamp will go on sale on August 26, 2010, the birth day of Mother. She was an honorary US Citizen. The stamp features a portrait of Mother Teresa, painted by award-winning artist Thomas Blackshear II.

INS Industrial Excellence Award 2008
INS Industrial Excellence Award 2008 was conferred to Heavy Engineering Corporation by eminent nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar. Its a Govt. of India enterprise based in Ranchi.

National Affairs:
Rajnath on Rangnath Mishra Commission Report:
Ranganath Mishra Commission was set up by Government of India to study and find solution for the minority status of India. Its report was submitted in 2007. It had suggested to curtail the reservation to the SCs, STs and OBCs while giving reservation to minorities. The three recommendations of this report were:

  • 15% of jobs in government services and seats in educational institutions for minorities
  • Reserve 8.4% out of existing OBC quota of 27% for minorities
  • SC reservation to Dalit converts.

Rajnath Singh, former BJP national president has said that this would lead to increased disparity and disharmony among the various religions and castes.
He quotes the example of Congress conference in 1916 in Lucknow, the separate muslim electorate was given a go ahead and later in 1937, the Peerpur resolution was adopted and these events led to India Pakistan Divide.

Up gradation of Panna:
The Panna National Park in Madhya Pradesh is going to be upgraded to international standards. After the local extinction of tigers from the Panna Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh, tiger reintroduction has been taken up to rebuild the population, besides supporting initiatives in the said reserve under the ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Project Tiger to strengthen tiger conservation. The 2004-05 Census counted 35 tigers/tigresses including a cub after which decline began. A tigress each was brought from Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks while a tiger was conveyed from Pench National Park.
Similar efforts were previously made for Sariska in Rajasthan.

Green car of Renault
Twizy Z.E. Concept is a new electric car from Renault. It was inaugurated by Sheila Dikshit. It will be on Indian roads by 2011. Its a two-seater car, which works on the green technology principle. It will be displayed in the 10th edition of the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Code-10
Code-10, a Malaysian hair styling products firm is a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive has been acquired by Marico. Code 10’s products include hair creams and gels. Code-10 is third largest player of Malaysia’s hair styling market.

Burj Dubai is Open to Public and is now Burj Khalifa
World’s tallest tower that stands at 828 metres is inaugurated by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammad. He has renamed the tower as Burj Khalifa after the United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Khalifa. Now it overtakes Taipei 101, which is 508 metres (1,676 feet) high.
Construction of this building began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009 and the building officially opened on 4 January 2010.
Burj Khalifa is a part of 490-acre flagship development called Downtown Burj Khalifa at the “First Interchange” along Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dubai’s main business district. The tower’s architect and engineer is Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, LLP of Chicago. Bill Baker is the the Chief Structural Engineer for the project and invented the buttressed core structural system in order to enable the tower to achieve such heights economically.

Nagoya Meet
Nagoya in Japan is the venue for tenth Conference of Parties (CoP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). One of the major item for consideration is the adoption of an international protocol on access and benefit sharing (ABS) and a text is being negotiated in this regard.

National Basketball Championship : Indian Railway retains men & women titles
Indian Railways has retained the men as well as women titles in the 60th Pearls Senior National Basketball Championship, Ludhina organised by Punjab Basketball Association at the Guru Nanak Stadium , Ludhinana. .
