Chinese Supercomputer LineShine Tops TOP500 List
China’s LineShine supercomputer ranked first in the 67th edition of the TOP500 list on 23 June 2026. The system is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen and recorded a performance of 2.198 exaflops, equal to more than 2 quintillion calculations per second.
TOP500 List and Exascale Computing
The TOP500 list ranks the world’s 500 most powerful supercomputers using the High Performance Linpack benchmark. Exascale computing refers to systems capable of at least one exaflop, or 1018 floating-point operations per second.
LineShine System Features
LineShine uses a CPU-only design and a custom 304-core processor. The system has 13.79 million cores and draws about 42.2 megawatts of power.
Global Supercomputer Ranking
LineShine displaced El Capitan, which is located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States. El Capitan recorded 1.809 exaflops and ranked second in the June 2026 TOP500 list.
Chinese Supercomputing Background
This is the first time since 2017 that a Chinese supercomputer has held the top position on the TOP500 list. Sunway TaihuLight was the earlier Chinese system to reach first place on the list.
Important Facts for Exams
- The TOP500 list is published twice a year and uses the High Performance Linpack benchmark.
- Exascale systems are defined by performance of at least one exaflop.
- LineShine became the first Chinese exascale system to top the TOP500 list in June 2026.
- Five exascale systems were listed globally in the June 2026 ranking, including three in the United States and one in Germany.
