Chhattisgarh to Host First Khelo India Tribal Games 2026
The inaugural edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) will be held from March 25 to April 6 in Chhattisgarh. The sporting event will take place across three cities — Raipur, Jagdalpur and Sarguja — and aims to promote sporting talent among tribal communities across India. The announcement was made by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, who highlighted the initiative as part of the broader effort to expand sports participation nationwide.
Sports and Participation in the Games
The first edition of the Khelo India Tribal Games will feature seven medal sports: athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming and wrestling. In addition, mallakhamb and kabaddi will be included as demonstration sports. Athletes from various States and Union Territories are expected to compete, creating a national platform for tribal youth to showcase their sporting abilities.
Part of the Khelo India Initiative
The Games are being organised under the Khelo India Scheme, a flagship Central Sector initiative aimed at promoting grassroots sports and identifying future sporting talent. The event will be jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Authority of India, the Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations and the Chhattisgarh state organising committee. Officials have stated that the technical standards for the competitions will align with international sporting benchmarks.
Promoting Tribal Talent in Sports
The Khelo India Tribal Games are designed to identify and nurture sporting talent emerging from tribal regions, which have historically produced several outstanding athletes. According to the Union Sports Minister, the initiative will help integrate talented youth from tribal communities into the national sports ecosystem. The programme also supports the broader national vision of strengthening India’s sporting culture as part of the development goals leading up to 2047.
