Centre Approves Delhi PWD Engineering Cadre

The Central Government of India approved a separate engineering cadre for the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) on 10 September 2026. The decision transfers 3,214 sanctioned engineering posts in 36 categories from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to the Delhi PWD Engineering Cadre.

The Delhi Public Works Department is a government department responsible for public infrastructure works in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Its functions include roads, bridges, government buildings, and other civil works under the Delhi government.

Engineering Cadre Structure

An engineering cadre is an organised service structure for technical posts in a department. The new cadre separates engineering posts from the CPWD framework and places them under the administrative control of the Delhi government.

The cadre includes 3,214 sanctioned posts across 36 categories. The structure is intended to allow direct management of transfers and disciplinary action within the Delhi PWD.

Administrative and Infrastructure Context

The approval follows the Delhi government’s internal Cabinet clearance for cadre separation, which was first proposed in September 2025. The reform had remained pending for nearly 30 years before the final Central clearance.

The new cadre will cover major infrastructure works in Delhi, including a new Secretariat, mini-secretariats in all 11 districts, mandis, sports grounds, roads, and bridges.
