Defence Ministry approves 250 MW solar project in Sitapur
The Defence Ministry approved a 250 MW Solar Power Project with a Battery Energy Storage System at Sitapur, also known as an ex-cantonment area, in Uttar Pradesh on 9 June 2026. The project will use about 850 acres of vacant defence land and will be implemented through NTPC Limited.
Solar Power Project on Defence Land
A solar power project converts sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic panels or solar thermal systems. Defence land is land owned or controlled by the Ministry of Defence for military, administrative, or allied purposes. Ex-cantonment areas are former cantonment areas that have been reclassified under local administrative arrangements.
Battery Energy Storage System
A Battery Energy Storage System stores electricity for later use and supports power supply during periods of low generation or high demand. In solar projects, BESS helps manage variability in output caused by daylight and weather conditions. Grid-connected solar projects with storage are used for load balancing and backup support.
Implementation and Institutional Roles
NTPC Limited is a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Power and has experience in power generation and renewable energy projects. The Ministry of Defence, NTPC, Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army), and the Directorate General Defence Estates will coordinate for project execution. Competitive bidding is a procurement method used to select a developer or contractor through price and technical evaluation.
Important Facts for Exams
- India’s installed renewable energy capacity includes solar, wind, hydro, and bioenergy sources.
- Battery Energy Storage System is a key technology for integrating variable renewable energy into the power grid.
- NTPC Limited was established in 1975 and is one of India’s largest power companies.
- Cantonment areas in India are governed under the Cantonments Act, 2006.
Defence Energy Security
Defence establishments require uninterrupted electricity for operational, residential, and administrative facilities. Solar power projects on defence land can support captive energy use and reduce dependence on conventional grid supply. The Sitapur project is planned as a large-scale renewable energy installation on defence land in Uttar Pradesh.
