Baldev Raj

Baldev Raj (9 April 1947 – 6 January 2018) was a distinguished Indian scientist and engineer renowned for his pioneering work in materials science, nuclear engineering, and non-destructive testing (NDT). He played a vital role in shaping India’s nuclear energy programme and served as the Director of both the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam and the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru. Early Life and Education

Baldev Raj was born in Jammu & Kashmir, India. He graduated with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Government Engineering College, Raipur (then under Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University). He later pursued a doctorate in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. His academic foundation in materials science laid the groundwork for a career devoted to advancing India’s scientific and technological capabilities in nuclear materials and engineering.

Contribution to Atomic Energy and IGCAR

Baldev Raj began his professional journey with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) before joining the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, under India’s Department of Atomic Energy. At IGCAR, he was instrumental in advancing India’s fast breeder reactor programme, contributing to the design, materials development, and engineering of sodium-cooled reactors.
