Assam Tables Uniform Civil Code Bill in Assembly

Assam tabled The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026 in the Assam Legislative Assembly on 25 May 2026. Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora introduced the Bill on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Uniform Civil Code in India

The Uniform Civil Code is a proposed legal framework for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession. Article 44 of the Constitution of India places the Uniform Civil Code among the Directive Principles of State Policy.

Key Provisions in the Assam Bill

Exemptions and Tribal Customary Law

The Bill exempts tribal communities in Assam’s hill and plain areas from its provisions. It also excludes their traditional religious customs and practices from the scope of the proposed law.

Legislative Process in Assam

The Assam Cabinet approved the draft Uniform Civil Code Bill on 13 May 2026. The Bill was scheduled for discussion and possible passage in the Assembly on 27 May 2026.
