Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Guidelines Released
The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister released the operational guidelines for the Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in New Delhi on 29 June 2026. The revised framework uses the name Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and replaces the earlier Anaemia Mukt Bharat programme structure.
Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan is a public health programme for prevention, detection, and management of anaemia in priority population groups. Anaemia is a condition marked by low haemoglobin concentration in blood and is commonly linked with iron deficiency, folate deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic disease, and parasitic infections.
7x7x7 Strategy
The updated operational design adopts a 7x7x7 strategy in place of the earlier 6x6x6 framework. The strategy includes seven beneficiary groups, seven interventions, and seven institutional mechanisms for service delivery and monitoring.
- Low birth weight infants aged 0-6 months have been added as a seventh beneficiary group.
- Eating Right has been added as a seventh intervention.
- Regular intake of iron-rich and diversified diets forms part of the dietary intervention package.
- The programme uses a life-cycle approach for anaemia prevention across maternal and child health groups.
Beneficiary Groups and Service Delivery
The programme covers pregnant women, lactating women, children, adolescents, and other vulnerable groups under a targeted anaemia control framework. Low birth weight infants aged 0-6 months are included for early intervention because infancy is a critical period for growth and haemoglobin development. The service delivery model has moved from the T3 approach of Test, Treat, and Talk to the T4 approach of Test, Treat, Talk, and Track. The fourth component, Track, is used for follow-up and monitoring of anaemia services.
Digital Monitoring and Treatment Protocols
The guidelines provide for a digital ecosystem for anaemia service monitoring through integration of the JANANI, Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram, and U-WIN portals into a unified AMB Abhiyaan Portal. JANANI is used in maternal and child health workflows, Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram covers child health screening, and U-WIN is a digital platform for immunisation-related records. For pregnant and lactating women with severe anaemia or poor response to oral iron therapy, the guidelines recommend intravenous iron therapy. Ferric Carboxymaltose and Iron Sucrose are listed as intravenous iron preparations used in clinical management.
Important Facts for Exams
- Anaemia is diagnosed by haemoglobin estimation and is classified by severity in public health programmes.
- Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common form of anaemia in India and many other countries.
- Ferric Carboxymaltose and Iron Sucrose are intravenous iron formulations used in hospital and clinical settings.
- U-WIN is a digital platform associated with immunisation and maternal-child health records in India.
Programme Context
Anaemia control programmes in India are linked with maternal health, child nutrition, adolescent health, and public distribution of micronutrient interventions. The operational guidelines place emphasis on screening, treatment, dietary counselling, and digital follow-up within a single programme architecture.
