AdaniConneX–Google Visakhapatnam Data Centres to Use Air Cooling
AdaniConneX, a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX, and Google are developing data-centre campuses with an approximate combined capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The campuses at Mudasarlova and Tarluvada are designed to use air-cooling technology rather than conventional water-based evaporative cooling. The project is Google’s largest investment in India, valued at US$15 billion.
Data Centre Cooling and Water Use
A data centre houses servers and other information-technology equipment used to store, process and transmit digital information. Cooling systems remove heat generated by this equipment. Evaporative cooling uses water evaporation to dissipate heat, while air cooling uses air as the cooling medium. The Visakhapatnam campuses are designed to limit freshwater use, with combined consumption across three sites planned to remain below the volume of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
About 80% of the limited freshwater required is intended for landscaping, kitchens and worker facilities. Water will be recycled and reused on-site. The campuses will use dedicated industrial water connections rather than municipal supply lines. Domestic wastewater will be treated and reused for irrigation and flushing under a zero-discharge policy.
Project Infrastructure and Timeline
Construction began after the project’s groundbreaking on 28 April 2026. The first phase is targeted for readiness by December 2028. The development is intended to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital infrastructure. Cloud computing provides access to computing resources, including storage and processing, over networks; data centres provide physical infrastructure for such services.
Freshwater Management Measures
Dedicated industrial connections separate the campuses’ planned water supply from municipal drinking-water lines. On-site wastewater treatment and reuse are specified for domestic wastewater, including water used for irrigation and flushing. The air-cooling design is intended to reduce reliance on water-intensive evaporative cooling.
