Adani Green Energy commissions battery storage system in Gujarat

Adani Green Energy Ltd commissioned a cumulative 3.37 gigawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System at Khavda in Gujarat on 26 May 2026. The installation is the world’s largest single-location battery storage deployment outside China and includes an additional 1.37 GWh commissioned in March 2026.

Battery Energy Storage System

A Battery Energy Storage System, or BESS, stores electricity in rechargeable batteries for later use. Utility-scale BESS projects use lithium-ion battery technology, power conversion systems, and energy management systems for grid support, frequency control, and peak load management.

Khavda Energy Project

Khavda is a renewable energy site in Gujarat associated with large-scale solar and wind development. The operational BESS capacity at Khavda now stands at 3.37 GWh, and the project was completed in 10 months from the start of on-site construction.

Capacity and Use Cases

The 3.37 GWh system can store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for one day. It can also meet the peak electricity demand of cities such as Indore and Chandigarh, or the entire state of Goa.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in grid-scale storage because they offer high energy density and fast response times.
  • Gigawatt-hour is a unit of energy, and 1 GWh equals 1,000 megawatt-hours.
  • Battery storage systems are used in renewable energy projects to balance variable solar and wind generation.
  • India has expanded utility-scale storage projects to support round-the-clock renewable power supply.

Expansion Plans

Adani Green Energy plans to add more than 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in fiscal year 2027. The company has also set a target of 50 GWh of battery storage capacity over the next five years.
