World University Ranking 2020

The World University Rankings 2020 has been published by UK-based Times Higher Education.

Top Universities of the World

  • The University of Oxford has retained the top spot for the fourth consecutive year.
  • The California Institute of Technology rose from fifth to the second position.
  • The University of Cambridge, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology each fell by one place to third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Where does Indian Universities Stand?

  • Six universities featured in THE World University Rankings 2020. This was a step-up in comparison to last year’s five universities.
  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was India’s only Indian entry in the top 300 last year. The IISc’s this year’s rankings have dropped positions from the 250-300 group to 301-350 group due to a “significant fall” in its research citation impact.
  • IISc has improved its performance in the research environment, teaching environment and industry income.
  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has debuted in the ranking with a joint top position of 301-350 with IISc.
  • IITs in Mumbai, Delhi, and Kharagpur were placed in the 401-500 ranking bracket.
  • IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi have increased their rankings by 100 ranks from the previous year,
  • 56 Indian universities featured in the overall 1,300-university list from 92 countries. Last year 49 Indian universities had featured in the list.

The rankings came as a disappointment for India as for the first time since 2012, there is not a single Indian entry in the world’s top 300 institutes.
