World Sickle Cell Day observed on June 19

World Sickle Cell Day is observed on 19th June each year to create awareness about sickle cell at a national and international level. In 2008, the disease was recognised by the UNGA as a public health problem and “one of the world’s foremost genetic diseases”. It is a genetic blood disorder where the blood cells have an abnormal crescent shape (like sickle).
