Mohamed Nasheed, the former president of the Maldives, has been granted political refugee status in the United Kingdom (UK). He is a prominent human rights campaigner and Maldives first democratically elected president, who served for 4 years before he was toppled in what he called a coup backed by the military and police. He was jailed in 2015 after a trial that drew widespread international criticism for being part of a slide to authoritarianism in the country. In January 2016, he was allowed to go to Britain on medical grounds.
