What are Ethanol ATMs?

Ethanol ATMs are proposed dispensing kiosks in India for selling ethanol in canisters for cooking use. The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is preparing a policy for wider use of ethanol as a mainstream cooking fuel, with a target timeline around September 2026.

Ethanol as a Fuel

Ethanol is an alcohol-based biofuel that is commonly produced from sugarcane, maize, and other biomass feedstocks. It is already used in India as a blending component in petrol under the ethanol blending programme.

Proposed Working of Ethanol ATMs

The proposed machines are expected to function at fuel retail outlets, where consumers can buy ethanol in sealed canisters. The canisters are designed with metal or thick plastic bodies and sealed lids, and they are meant to connect to specially designed ethanol stoves. State-run oil marketing companies are involved in research on ethanol-powered cooking stoves and pilot kiosks. The pilot installations are expected to test consumer response before wider deployment.

Policy and Energy Context

India’s ethanol production capacity has crossed 20 billion litres annually, and it is projected to reach 24 billion litres by March 2027. The policy push is linked to the use of surplus ethanol output and to reducing dependence on imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Liquefied Petroleum Gas, or LPG, is a mixture of propane and butane used widely in Indian households for cooking. Ethanol is being considered as a supplementary cooking fuel rather than a full replacement for LPG.

Possible Initial Use Cases

The first phase may focus on commercial kitchens, restaurants, and street food vendors. These sectors use cooking fuel in bulk and can adopt alternative fuel systems through dedicated dispensing and stove infrastructure.
