WFI Lifts Bans on Aman Sehrawat and Neha Sangwan

The Wrestling Federation of India has revoked the suspensions of Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat and junior wrestler Neha Sangwan, allowing both to resume full participation in domestic and international events. The move restores India’s leading freestyle talent to the competitive circuit and removes the unprecedented tag of an Olympic medallist being barred by his own national federation for indiscipline.

WFI Revokes Bans on Top Wrestlers

Aman, a Paris Olympics bronze medallist and former Asian champion, had been handed a one-year suspension starting 23 September 2025 for failing to make weight at the World Championships in Zagreb. Neha, a U20 World Championships bronze medallist, was serving a two-year ban after being disqualified for being overweight at the Junior Worlds in Samokov. With the order withdrawn, both are now cleared to compete with immediate effect.

Weight-Miss Incidents and Initial Sanctions

Aman missed the 57kg weight limit by 1.7kg ahead of his opening bout in Zagreb, leading to disqualification and subsequent disciplinary proceedings. Neha was found 700g over the 59kg limit at the U20 Worlds, resulting in her removal from the draw. Show-cause notices were issued — to Neha in August and Aman in late September — and both wrestlers, along with coaches from the Zagreb event, submitted written explanations acknowledging their lapse and assuring improved weight management in future.

Disciplinary Committee’s Lenient View

The WFI disciplinary committee met on 13 November to review the cases. It cited the wrestlers’ consistent record of medals and strong international performances, treating the offences as first-time violations. On this basis, the committee recommended a lenient approach and advised giving them another opportunity. Acting on these recommendations, WFI president Sanjay Kumar Singh ordered the lifting of both suspensions, while reiterating the need for strict adherence to federation rules.

Return to Mat and Pro Wrestling League Prospects

With the sanctions removed, both wrestlers can enter the auction pool for the upcoming edition of the Pro Wrestling League, marking their formal return to competitive wrestling. Aman also remains eligible for selection to major events such as the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, which would have been ruled out had his ban continued. The federation has issued a stern warning that any repeat breach related to weight management or discipline will attract significantly harsher action.
