West Bengal Launches Shramashree Scheme For Migrant Workers

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently announced the Shramashree scheme. It aims to support migrant workers returning to the State after facing harassment elsewhere. The scheme offers a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 for up to one year. It also provides access to other State welfare benefits such as ration cards and free healthcare under the Swastha Sathi scheme.

Background

Thousands of Bengali-speaking migrant workers have faced detention and harassment in various States across India. Many were asked to prove their citizenship, with some even deported to Bangladesh before being repatriated. Despite these challenges, many migrants returned to their workplaces due to limited job opportunities in West Bengal. The State government brought into light that around 10,000 workers have returned in recent months.

Details

The scheme targets all 22,40,000 migrant workers from West Bengal currently outside the State. Workers can register on the Shramashree portal to receive a card that grants access to benefits. The monthly financial aid of ₹5,000 is intended to support them until they find employment. Families of migrant workers will also benefit from other government welfare programmes.

Support and Registration Process

Returning workers must register their names on the official portal to avail benefits. The scheme is designed to ease their reintegration into the State’s economy and social framework. The government plans to facilitate their access to essential services and social security.
