Wabtec Secures $94 Million Vande Bharat Sleeper Order
On 27 October 2026, US-headquartered Wabtec Corporation secured orders worth about $94 million (₹839 crore) from Indian Railways. The contract covers onboard systems for the Vande Bharat Sleeper train programme.
Railway systems in the contract
Wabtec will supply braking systems, doors and gangway solutions to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) over the next two financial years. The scope also includes system delivery, integration support, testing, commissioning and long-term operational reliability support.
Braking systems control a train’s speed and help bring it to a stop. Gangways are flexible, enclosed connections between coaches that allow movement between them. The supplied systems are intended to support train availability, maintenance and passenger safety.
Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets
ICF, a major Indian Railways manufacturing unit in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, will manufacture 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets. Each trainset will have 24 coaches, giving a planned total of 1,200 coaches across the 50 trainsets.
The sleeper trainsets are designed for long-distance overnight travel. The contract includes support for integrating and testing the onboard systems before commissioning.
