VOC Port Sets Record with Handling of 103 Windmill Blades
VOC Port in Thoothukudi has achieved a significant milestone by handling 103 windmill blades in a single shipment, setting a new benchmark in renewable energy cargo management. This surpasses its previous record of 101 blades handled on August 22, reflecting the port’s growing efficiency and capability in managing large-scale renewable energy components.
Record-Breaking Renewable Energy Shipment
The record-breaking operation took place at Additional Berth-II, where the vessel MV GHT Marinas arrived from the port of Qinzhou, China. The handling was carried out using two harbour mobile cranes, ensuring safe and smooth operations. The logistics were managed by NTC Logistics India Pvt. Ltd., which oversaw vessel agency, stevedoring, customs clearance, and ground transportation.
Growth in Windmill Blade Handling
During the current fiscal year up to October, VOC Port handled 2,300 windmill blades—marking a 61 per cent increase over the 1,425 blades managed during the same period last year. This consistent growth highlights the port’s strategic focus on facilitating renewable energy trade and its readiness to serve as a key logistics hub in India’s green energy transition.
Infrastructure and Specialised Handling
The port’s infrastructure has been upgraded to manage over-dimensional cargo like windmill blades, which measure 89.5 metres and 76.8 metres in length. A dedicated storage area of 1,00,000 square metres within the customs-notified zone, along with vast bonded areas outside, ensures the safe accommodation and movement of such large cargo. These facilities have positioned VOC Port among India’s leading ports in renewable energy logistics.
