Uttar Pradesh Wins Most Proactive State Award Under RCS–UDAN

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a leading force in India’s civil aviation landscape after receiving the national award for ‘Most Proactive State’ under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)–UDAN in the Non-Priority Area category. The recognition highlights the state’s sustained policy push to improve air connectivity, particularly linking smaller cities with major urban centres, and reflects the broader development vision pursued by the state government.

Recognition for Connectivity-Led Development

The award is conferred on states that are neither hill states nor part of the North-East, making the achievement significant given the competitive nature of the category. Officials described the recognition as a milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s aviation journey, underlining proactive coordination between the state and the Centre to operationalise new routes, upgrade infrastructure, and attract airline participation under the UDAN framework.

Sharp Rise in Passenger Traffic

The impact of expanded connectivity is evident in passenger growth. Air passenger traffic in Uttar Pradesh rose from 59.97 lakh in 2016 to over 1.28 crore in 2024, crossing 1.55 crore in 2025. Domestic air travel has been the primary driver, reflecting increased affordability and access to regional airports. The data signals growing demand from business, tourism, and personal travel segments across the state.

Growth in Air Cargo and Economic Impact

Alongside passenger traffic, air cargo movement has recorded strong growth. Cargo volumes increased from 5,895 metric tonnes in 2016 to 27,998 metric tonnes in 2024 and further to 29,761 metric tonnes in 2025. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 17.58 per cent over nine years. The surge has strengthened supply chains for agriculture, MSMEs, and export-oriented industries, supporting faster movement of perishable and high-value goods.
