UP Launches Chief Minister Teacher Cashless Medical Scheme
Uttar Pradesh launched the Chief Minister Teacher Cashless Medical Scheme, also called Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana, in Varanasi on 8 July 2026. The scheme provides cashless medical treatment for teaching and non-teaching staff and their dependents in Uttar Pradesh.
Scheme Coverage and Beneficiaries
The scheme covers about 12 lakh to 15 lakh beneficiaries across government, aided, and grant-in-aid schools under the Basic and Secondary Education Department. It also includes Shiksha Mitras, instructors, cooks, and staff of Kasturba Gandhi Girls Schools. Cashless treatment is available up to ₹5 lakh per family every year. Beneficiaries can take treatment in government hospitals and empanelled private hospitals.
Funding and Implementation
The Uttar Pradesh government will pay the full annual premium for the scheme. The estimated annual premium is about ₹447 crore, which works out to an average of around ₹3,000 per teacher each year. The State Agency for Comprehensive Health and Integrated Services, or SACHIS, will facilitate implementation. The scheme is modelled on Ayushman Bharat, which is India’s flagship public health insurance scheme for eligible families.
Related Social Security Provisions
An MoU between the Basic Education Department and the State Bank of India provides social security cover for around 10 lakh teachers and contractual employees. The cover includes group life insurance, personal accident insurance, and disability cover. During the launch, cashless medical cards were distributed to 15 beneficiaries, including teachers, Shiksha Mitras, instructors, and cooks. Uttar Pradesh also announced life-term insurance coverage of up to ₹1 crore for teachers, Shiksha Mitras, and instructors, with the state government paying the entire premium.
