UK Launches Storm Fighter Loyal Wingman Programme

The United Kingdom launched the Royal Air Force’s new collaborative combat aircraft programme, named Storm Fighter, on 16 July 2026. The programme seeks to develop autonomous loyal wingman drones for operations with crewed combat aircraft such as Typhoon, F-35 and the future Tempest fighter.

Collaborative Combat Aircraft

Collaborative combat aircraft, or CCA, are unmanned aircraft designed to operate with crewed fighters in combat roles. These aircraft can extend sensor reach, carry weapons, conduct electronic attack, or serve as decoys for manned jets.

Storm Fighter Programme

Storm Fighter is funded through a £300 million allocation under the United Kingdom’s Defence Investment Plan, published on 2 July 2026. The programme was announced by Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, at the Air & Space Power Association Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference in London.

Loyal Wingman Concepts and Related Programmes

The programme includes early concepts such as Storm Chrome for electronic attack and Storm Fire as a one-way attack drone with a range of up to 1,000 miles. These designs build on StormShroud, an autonomous drone that entered service in May 2025, and follow the cancellation of Project Mosquito in 2022.
