Two New Freshwater Fish Species Discovered in Nagaland Rivers

Researchers have identified two new freshwater fish species from Nagaland, highlighting the rich but underexplored aquatic biodiversity of Northeast India. The discoveries were published in the international journal “Zootaxa” and were made by J. Praveenraj of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Island Agricultural Research Institute and independent researcher Balaji Vijayakrishnan. The species were found during ichthyological surveys in tributaries of the Brahmaputra River in Mokokchung district.

Species Named in Tribute to Late Collaborator’s Children

The newly identified species, “Glyptothorax sentimereni” and “Oreichthys elianae”, were named after the son and daughter of Limakum, a late assistant professor from Nagaland who had collaborated closely with the researchers. According to the authors, naming species after his children fulfilled one of his final wishes. The tribute reflects both the scientific contribution of the late scholar and the personal bonds that shaped the research effort.

Unique Characteristics of the New Species

“Glyptothorax sentimereni” was discovered in the rocky stretches of the Dikhu River. It belongs to a group of torrent-dwelling catfish adapted to fast-flowing streams. The species possesses a rhomboidal thoracic adhesive apparatus surrounded by keratinised ridges, allowing it to cling firmly to rocks in strong currents. Distinct features such as serrations on the dorsal-fin spine and folded surfaces on the pectoral and pelvic fins differentiate it from other species in the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna river basin.

Distinctive Cyprinid from a Tributary Stream

The second species, “Oreichthys elianae”, was identified in a tributary of the Tsurang River. This small cyprinid fish measures slightly over 2.5 centimetres in length and is notable for its bright red fins and a prominent black blotch near the base of its tail. It has an incomplete lateral line with only five pored scales and distinctive cheek pores, features that clearly distinguish it from closely related species found across India and Southeast Asia.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Nagaland lies at the intersection of the Eastern Himalaya and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots.
  • The Brahmaputra river system supports diverse freshwater fish species across Northeast India.
  • The genus Glyptothorax includes catfish adapted to fast-flowing mountain streams.
  • The journal “Zootaxa” is an international scientific journal specialising in animal taxonomy.

Significance for Biodiversity Research

The discoveries highlight the limited scientific exploration of freshwater ecosystems in Northeast India. While the region’s orchids, insects and amphibians have received increasing research attention, systematic documentation of fish diversity remains relatively recent. Scientists note that the geological history of the region, shaped by tectonic shifts and river system changes, has created unique habitats capable of supporting endemic species. The findings reinforce the importance of continued research and conservation efforts in the rivers of the Brahmaputra basin.
