Territorial Army

The Territorial Army (TA) serves as a vital component of India’s defence strategy. Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the Government of India has activated the TA to boost military presence across the nation. This move reflects a proactive approach to national security, deploying 14 of the 32 existing TA battalions in strategic military zones.

The Territorial Army is a volunteer force that acts as a second line of defence for India. Unlike regular soldiers, TA members are civilians who balance their civilian professions with military responsibilities. They dedicate time to training and are prepared to serve during emergencies, such as wars and natural disasters.

Structure and Training

The Territorial Army comprises approximately 50,000 personnel across 65 units. These units include both departmental units, like those from Railways and ONGC, and non-departmental units, such as infantry battalions and ecological task forces. Members undergo two months of military training annually. They receive the same pay and privileges as regular army officers when activated.

Historical Context

The TA has its roots in the Indian Territorial Force, established in 1920. Its origins trace back to the 1857 First War of Independence. The Territorial Army Act was passed in 1948, and the force was officially launched in 1949 by C. Rajagopalachari. Since its inception, the TA has participated in several key military operations, including the wars of 1962, 1965, and 1971.

Role in Military Operations

The TA has played role in various military operations, including Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and anti-insurgency efforts in regions like Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Its personnel also assist during natural disasters, showcasing the force’s versatility.

Territorial Army Day

October 9 is celebrated annually as Territorial Army Day. This day commemorates the contributions of the TA to national security and recognises the dedication of its volunteers.

Current Relevance

With escalating security concerns, the government’s recent decision to deploy TA battalions marks the importance of this reserve force. The TA’s ability to mobilise quickly adds a layer of readiness to India’s defence capabilities.
