Tamil Nadu Declares Greater Flamingo Sanctuary

In conservation effort, the Tamil Nadu government has established a Greater Flamingo Sanctuary at Dhanushkodi, coinciding with World Environment Day. This sanctuary aims to protect migratory bird habitats and enhance biodiversity in the region. Spanning 524.7 hectares, it is important part of the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve. The sanctuary supports various ecosystems, including mangroves and mudflats, vital for marine life and nesting birds.
Ecological Importance of Dhanushkodi
Dhanushkodi is located along the Central Asian Flyway. This migratory route is essential for birds travelling between Eurasia and the Indian subcontinent. Recent surveys have recorded over 10,700 wetland birds, including 128 species. Notable species include Greater and Lesser Flamingos, herons, and sandpipers. The sanctuary’s mangroves act as natural barriers against coastal erosion and provide breeding grounds for wildlife.
Government Initiatives for Biodiversity
The Tamil Nadu government has committed to various initiatives. A Government Order emphasises the ecological value of the sanctuary. The establishment of the ‘Raptors Research Foundation’ aims to protect birds of prey, such as eagles and vultures. This foundation will implement conservation measures and raise community awareness about the importance of these species.
Promotion of Ecotourism and Employment
The sanctuary is expected to promote responsible ecotourism. This initiative will not only generate local employment but also enhance public awareness about wetland conservation. The government aims to balance ecological preservation with community benefits.
Broader Conservation Efforts
The 2025-26 budget includes plans for a biodiversity park in the Chengam region, spanning 1000 hectares. This park aims to restore endangered native tree species and promote eco-tourism. Additionally, the budget allocates funds for a ‘Marine Resource Foundation’ to protect Tamil Nadu’s coastline and prioritise mangrove conservation.
Infrastructure and Environmental Standards
The budget proposes investments to improve environmental standards. Six beaches will receive Blue Flag certification, ensuring they meet safety and environmental criteria. Funds are also allocated to convert diesel buses to CNG, reducing air pollution, and upgrading forest roads to support sustainable development.
