State-Level Watershed Mahotsav 2025 Launches Mission Punarutthan in Nagaland
The government has inaugurated the State-Level Watershed Mahotsav 2025 alongside Mission Watershed Punarutthan at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima. The initiative aims to rejuvenate traditional water bodies, restore degraded land and enhance water-harvesting systems through community-driven action and convergence with flagship schemes.
Goals of Mission Watershed Punarutthan
The mission focuses on water security, rural sustainability and ecological restoration. It seeks to revive springs, strengthen watershed structures and improve local water availability. Community participation forms its core, supported by programmes such as MGNREGA to ensure long-term livelihood benefits across villages.
Government Vision and Policy Emphasis
Addressing the launch, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications highlighted water security as a national priority. He noted Nagaland’s cultural and ecological strength in community-led conservation, stressing that restoring natural resources is essential for future resilience and environmental stability.
Achievements Under PMKSY in Nagaland
Significant progress has been recorded under PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and watershed development efforts in the state. Fourteen watershed projects have been approved, with Rs 140 crore sanctioned and Rs 80 crore released. Renovation work includes 555 water-harvesting structures, restoration of 120 springs and benefits reaching more than 6,500 farmers.
Exam Oriented Facts
- Nagaland has 14 approved watershed projects under PMKSY.
- Rs 140 crore sanctioned; Rs 80 crore released for implementation.
- 555 water-harvesting structures renovated and 120 springs restored.
- North Eastern States receive 90% central assistance for such schemes.
National Priorities and Water Security
The programme aligns with broader national goals to transform water-stressed regions into climate-resilient landscapes. With India holding just 4% of global freshwater and supporting a much larger population share, initiatives such as PMKSY have become vital in raising groundwater levels, enabling multiple crop cycles and boosting rural incomes.
