SGPC Urges Policy Against AI Misinformation on Gurbani
Recent concerns have emerged over the spread of misinformation related to Sikhism through Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called on the Indian Union Government to establish a clear policy to prevent such distortions. The SGPC has also reached out to major AI companies requesting immediate corrective actions to protect the sanctity of Sikh religious teachings.
Context of the Issue
The SGPC has raised alarms about AI-generated content that misrepresents Gurbani, Sikh history, and Gurmat. Distorted verses and altered images have caused deep hurt among Sikhs worldwide. The committee emphasises that the Guru Granth Sahib is the supreme religious scripture and must not be tampered with. These inaccuracies are viewed not just as misinformation but as acts of sacrilege.
About SGPC
Established in 1920 during the Gurdwara Reform Movement, the SGPC manages major Sikh shrines including the Golden Temple in Amritsar. It functions under the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925. The committee acts as a guardian of Sikh traditions, overseeing religious, educational, and cultural activities. It also publishes religious texts and organises events to promote Sikh teachings.
SGPC’s Actions and Appeals
The SGPC has formally contacted AI platforms including ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and others. It has demanded the removal of incorrect content and measures to prevent future dissemination. The committee has also flagged issues with certain mobile applications that present Gurbani inaccurately. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has appealed to the Sikh community to rely only on verified sources and authentic texts.
Concerns Over Digital Influence
The rise of AI tools and digital media has increased the risk of misleading portrayals of Sikh figures, symbols, and scriptures. Younger generations, who often learn about their heritage online, may be exposed to incomplete or false narratives. This threatens the spiritual integrity and cultural identity of Sikhism.
Call for Government Intervention
The SGPC has urged the Union Home Ministry, led by Amit Shah, to take formal cognisance of the issue. It seeks a national policy to regulate AI content related to religion. The committee stresses that coordinated action is essential to preserve the sanctity of Sikhism in the digital age.
