Scientists Explore Black Hole Star Explanation for Little Red Dots

Astronomers have identified a new class of cosmic object called a black hole star, written as BH”, in a study published in Nature on 12 August 2026. The object MoM-BH”-1 was detected by the James Webb Space Telescope during the Mirage or Miracle of the MoM survey and existed less than 660 million years after the Big Bang.

Black Hole Star Concept

A black hole star is a proposed early-universe object with a central black hole surrounded by a dense envelope of hydrogen and helium gas. In this model, the black hole powers the object in a way that differs from ordinary stars, which generate energy through nuclear fusion in their cores.

MoM-BH”-1 Discovery

MoM-BH”-1 is described as the most distant black hole star found so far. It is roughly the size of the Solar System and contains a central black hole about 100,000 times the mass of the Sun. The object appears to exist without a surrounding galaxy.

Little Red Dots and Spectral Features

Little Red Dots are compact, red, high-redshift objects observed in the early universe. MoM-BH*-1 shows a deep Balmer break, which is a sharp drop in brightness at specific wavelengths linked to hydrogen absorption. Measurements also indicate an energy output about 100 billion times greater than that of any known star.
