Sanae Takaichi has made history by becoming Japan’s first female Prime Minister. Early Political Career

Sanae Takaichi began her political career in 1993 when she won a seat in Japan’s Lower House as an independent candidate. Her initial entry into politics was preceded by a career as a television anchor, which helped her build a public profile. In 1996, she joined the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), marking the beginning of her long-standing association with Japan’s predominant political force.

Cabinet Roles

Takaichi’s political career has included several important cabinet roles. She first entered the Cabinet under former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, serving as the Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs. Her tenure in the Cabinet has been marked by her focus on regional issues and national security. From 2022 to 2024, she served as Japan’s Economic Security Minister, a role that involved strategising to protect Japan’s economic interests in a rapidly changing global environment.

Prime Ministerial Election

Takaichi’s election as Prime Minister was a closely contested affair. She secured 125 votes in the Upper House, just one vote above the simple majority required. In the Lower House, she garnered 237 votes, comfortably exceeding the majority threshold of 233. Her victory is seen as a testament to her political acumen and ability to garner support across different factions within the LDP and the broader political landscape.

As Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi faces several pressing challenges. Japan is grappling with sluggish economic growth, rising prices, and a sharp depreciation of the yen.
