SAIL Bhilai Steel Plant Launches CO2 Dashboard

SAIL Bhilai Steel Plant Launches CO2 Dashboard

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) launched a digital CO2 Dashboard at Bhilai Steel Plant on 18 August 2026. The platform tracks carbon emissions for Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh and Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant in Maharashtra.

Digital Emission Monitoring

The CO2 Dashboard provides real-time calculation and analysis of daily carbon dioxide emissions. It covers both plant-wide emissions and individual shop-level emissions for anomaly detection.

Standards and Methodology

The dashboard uses the World Steel Association methodology, the GHG Protocol, and the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism framework for carbon footprint assessment. These standards are used in industrial emissions accounting and product-level footprinting.

Carbon Credit Trading Scheme Linkage

The system is aligned with India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, which is a domestic carbon market framework under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. The dashboard monitors emission-intensity targets that can support carbon credit generation.

Important Facts for Exams

  • SAIL is a Maharatna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Steel.
  • Bhilai Steel Plant is one of India’s major integrated steel plants and is located in Chhattisgarh.
  • Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant is located in Maharashtra and is part of SAIL’s production network.
  • The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is a European Union policy linked to carbon pricing on imports.

Industrial Decarbonisation Tools

Digital dashboards are used in heavy industries for emissions tracking, compliance monitoring, and data-based reporting. Carbon footprinting is a method of measuring greenhouse gas emissions associated with a process, plant, or product.
