Rajnath Singh Presents SIDM Champion Awards 2026
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh presented the SIDM Champion Awards 2026 on 9 October 2026 at the 8th Annual Session of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) in New Delhi. The ceremony recognised 15 organisations for achievements in indigenous technology development, product innovation, design, import substitution, manufacturing excellence and exports.
SIDM and Defence Manufacturing
The Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers is an industry association representing Indian defence manufacturers. India’s defence manufacturing sector includes public-sector enterprises, private companies and micro, small and medium enterprises that produce equipment and components for the armed forces.
Import substitution refers to replacing imported goods with domestically produced alternatives. In defence manufacturing, this can involve developing and producing equipment, components or technologies within India.
Indigenous Procurement Framework
The Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 governs capital acquisitions by the Ministry of Defence. It includes procurement categories such as Buy (Indian-IDDM), where IDDM means Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured, and Buy (Indian). The procedure provides for domestic procurement and indigenous design and production.
Research and development (R&D) involves systematic work to develop new products, processes or technologies. At the award ceremony, Singh called for greater private-sector participation, increased R&D investment and enhanced defence production capacity.
Defence Exports and Targets
India’s defence exports reached a record ₹38,424 crore in the financial year 2025–26, recording growth of more than 60% over the previous financial year. The government’s stated target is to raise defence exports to ₹50,000 crore by 2029.
Singh said national security increasingly depends on India’s ability to design, develop, manufacture and control technologies and equipment for its Defence Forces.
