January 15 has been celebrated as Army Day every year, to mark the day General KM Cariappa (who later became Field Marshal) took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Gen F R Roy Bucher.
During the celebration, the new combat uniform for the Indian Army was unveiled, which will be made available nearly 12 lakh personnel of the Indian Army. It is an ergonomically designed, operationally effective, new-generation camouflage combat uniform.

Legendary Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away recently at the age of 83. He is also known as Panditji and Maharaj-ji by his disciples.
He is regarded as one of India’s best known artistes. He was awarded the ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi Award’ in 1964 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1986. He was also awarded the National Film Award for Best Choreography.

The Union Textiles Ministry launched the ‘National Technical Textiles Mission’ (NTTM) in the year 2020. Recently, the textiles ministry cleared 20 strategic projects worth Rs 30 crore in the areas of Speciality fibres (16) and Geo-textiles (4) under the mission.
The projects of speciality fibres approved include projects in healthcare, industrial and protective, energy storage-textile waste recycling, and agriculture. Earlier, 11 research projects worth Rs 78.60 crore were cleared by the Ministry of Textiles on March 26, 2021.

North Macedonia’s Parliament elected a new cabinet under a new Social Democratic leader, Dimitar Kovacevski.
He succeeds his Social Democratic predecessor, Zoran Zaev. The new Prime Minister announced that his immediate tasks are tackling the ongoing energy crisis and key talks with Bulgaria. The Republic of North Macedonia is a country in Southeast Europe.

Amazon India has signed a memorandum of understanding with the NIF Incubation and Entrepreneurship Council (NIFientreC). The agreement aims to accelerate innovation, local economy and improve livelihoods across rural India.
NIFientreC is a technology business incubator hosted by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Ministry of Panchayati Raj released the revised ‘Rural Area Development Plan Formulation and Implementation (RADPFI) Guidelines’.
The newly introduced Rural guidelines aim to transform rural India and to promote rural prosperity. It would supplement the efforts of the Centre such as the SVAMITVA scheme of Ministry of Panchayati Raj and RURBAN Mission of Ministry of Rural Development.

‘Anxiety’ has been chosen by children as their word of the year for 2021, according to new research from Oxford University Press.
The research also highlights that Teachers have chosen “resilience” as their word. Oxford University Press analysed the evolution of children’s language, and how they use it to reflect their emotions and experiences.

Sania Mirza was the Indian woman tennis player to rise to the top spot in either singles or doubles, when she claimed the No 1 place in Doubles in 2015.
She also holds the record of the first Indian woman to lift a Grand slam doubles title, when she won at the Wimbledon. After a break, she created a record by winning the Fed Cup heart Award. Recently, the ace tennis player has announced retirement after 2022 season.

Notes:
India’s first ever District Good Governance Index (DGGI) was released in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
In the composite ranking of the index, the Jammu district tops the list followed by districts of Doda, Samba, Pulwama and Srinagar in the UT. The Index is a framework document which assesses the performance under ten governance sectors with 58 indicators.

Notes:
The Indian Government has dropped Gandhiji’s personal favourite “Abide With Me” hymn from the Republic Day celebrations.
The hymn, which was written by Henry Francis Lyte, a Scottish Anglican minister, has been played in the Indian Beating Retreat ceremony since 1950. It has been replaced by Kavi Pradeep’s “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon” which was written in the wake of the Sino-Indian War.
