PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi became India’s longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister on 10 June 2026 after completing 4,399 continuous days in office. He first took the oath as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014 and has served three consecutive terms.

Longest-Serving Elected Prime Ministers of India

Narendra Modi surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 days as an elected Prime Minister. Nehru served from 13 May 1952 until 27 May 1964, and his tenure remained the longest among elected Prime Ministers until 10 June 2026.

Continuous Tenure and Electoral Records

On 25 July 2025, Narendra Modi surpassed Indira Gandhi’s uninterrupted tenure as Prime Minister by completing 4,078 continuous days in office. Indira Gandhi served continuously from 24 January 1966 to 24 March 1977. He became the first non-Congress leader to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha. He also became the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to win three consecutive general elections as the incumbent leader in 2014, 2019, and 2024.

Combined Elected Government Tenure

On 22 March 2026, Narendra Modi became India’s longest-serving head of an elected government after completing 8,931 days in office. This total combined his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister, and it surpassed Pawan Kumar Chamling’s record as Chief Minister of Sikkim.
