Operation Urja Suraksha Secures India’s Energy Shipments

The Indian Navy has initiated Operation Urja Suraksha to safeguard India-bound energy shipments passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions in West Asia. The operation is being conducted with precision and limited publicity to ensure uninterrupted and secure transit of Indian-flagged vessels carrying critical energy resources such as LNG, LPG and crude oil.

Strategic Importance of the Operation

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most crucial maritime chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil trade. Any disruption in this region can directly impact India’s energy security. Recognising this, the Indian Navy has adopted a proactive approach to ensure that essential supplies reach domestic ports without delay, thereby stabilising economic and industrial activities.

Deployment and Escort Measures

Under the operation, 22 vessels have been identified for secure transit, including 20 high-priority ships. More than five frontline warships, including destroyers and frigates, have been deployed to escort these vessels. Early successes include the safe passage of LPG carriers Pine Gas and Jag Vasant, carrying a combined 92,000 tonnes of LPG. Additional escorted vessels include Shivalik, Nanda Devi and crude oil tanker Jag Laadki.

Risk Management and Navigation Support

The region poses heightened risks due to reports of underwater mines and geopolitical instability. To counter these threats, the Navy is utilising advanced hydrographic charts to map the seabed and identify safe navigation routes. Naval teams also provide real-time guidance and route-specific instructions to ship crews, ensuring safe passage through narrow and sensitive waters. Escort operations often extend beyond the Strait to ensure layered maritime security.
