National Paralympic Powerlifting Championship Inaugurated in Roorkee

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami virtually inaugurated the National Paralympic Powerlifting Championship on Friday, describing the last decade as a golden chapter in India’s sporting history. Addressing the inaugural ceremony from COER University in Roorkee, he said Indian sports have undergone an unprecedented transformation, marked by wider participation, improved infrastructure and growing global recognition.

Celebration of Willpower and Inclusion

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the championship represents more than a competitive platform. He described it as a celebration of India’s indomitable willpower, where challenges are turned into opportunities. He emphasised that para-sports reflect the country’s commitment to inclusion, dignity and equal opportunity in sports.

The Chief Minister highlighted powerlifting as a sport that embodies discipline, patience, courage and self-confidence. He noted that it is not merely a test of physical strength but also a powerful example of mental resilience and self-respect. According to him, para-athletes inspire society by redefining limitations and demonstrating extraordinary determination.

Achievements of Divyang Athletes

CM Dhami said that India’s divyang athletes are bringing pride to the nation across multiple disciplines. He recalled the achievements of pioneers who laid the foundation for India’s Paralympic journey. He referred to Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medallist, who won gold in swimming at the 1972 Summer Paralympics, and Satyendra Singh Lohiya, the first Indian divyang athlete to swim across the English Channel within 12 hours.
