Modi to Address Israeli Knesset Plenum

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to become the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Israeli Knesset plenum during his two-day visit to Israel beginning February 25. The visit marks his second trip to the country since 2017 and underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the visit as “historic”, reflecting the deepening ties in defence, innovation, and regional cooperation.

Historic Parliamentary Address

The address will be delivered during a special plenary session at the Knesset in Jerusalem. Modi will join Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and other senior leaders during the ceremonial proceedings. The session will also feature remarks by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and Leader of the Opposition Yair Lapid.

This will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister addresses the Knesset, symbolising India’s rising global profile and its expanding engagement in West Asia.

The official schedule includes a welcome ceremony at the Weil Courtyard, followed by the signing of the Knesset guestbook at the Chagall State Hall. A joint photograph session and high-level bilateral discussions are also planned.

Talks are expected to focus on defence cooperation, technological innovation, counter-terrorism, agriculture, water management, and regional security. India and Israel have significantly strengthened cooperation since the establishment of full diplomatic relations in 1992.

The visit has become entangled in Israel’s domestic political tensions. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has threatened to boycott the special session unless Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit is invited, in accordance with parliamentary convention.

The dispute is linked to an ongoing judicial reform controversy that has deeply polarised Israeli politics. Justice Minister Yariv Levin has reportedly refused to recognise Amit’s authority following his appointment in January 2025, intensifying institutional tensions.
