MBDA Signs Pact with IAF for MICA MRO
European missile manufacturer MBDA signed an agreement with the Indian Air Force on 6 May 2026 to establish domestic Maintenance, Repair, and Mid-Life Overhaul capability for the MICA air-to-air missile system in India. The facility will be set up, operated, and maintained by the Indian Air Force, with MBDA providing industrial machinery, tooling, technical data packages, training, and specialist support.
MICA Missile System
MICA is a French-origin air-to-air missile developed for both beyond-visual-range and short-range engagements. The Indian Air Force uses MICA on Rafale fighter jets and upgraded Mirage 2000 aircraft, and the missile entered IAF service in 2016 after the Mirage 2000 upgrade programme.
Maintenance, Repair, and Mid-Life Overhaul
Maintenance, Repair, and Mid-Life Overhaul, or MRO, refers to servicing activities that extend the operational life of defence equipment. In missile systems, MRO facilities handle inspection, repair, component replacement, testing, and refurbishment during the service life of the weapon.
Atmanirbhar Bharat and Defence Self-Reliance
Atmanirbhar Bharat is a national initiative launched in 2020 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the defence sector, the initiative covers domestic production, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and technology absorption for military platforms and weapons.
