Matri Van Initiative

The Matri Van initiative was launched in Gurugram as step towards ecological preservation and urban sustainability. This urban forest project, part of the Government of India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ programme, aims to create a green legacy by involving communities and multiple stakeholders. Spread over 750 acres in the Aravalli Hills, it promises to enhance biodiversity and public well-being in the Delhi NCR region.

Launch

The initiative was inaugurated by Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav and Manohar Lal during Van Mahotsav 2025. The Haryana Forest Department organised the event with support from state government officials and public representatives. The project reflects a joint effort between government bodies, NGOs, corporate partners, Resident Welfare Associations, and citizens, including school children.

Project Vision and Ecological Importance

Matri Van is designed as a theme-based urban forest inspired by the nurturing qualities of mother nature. It aims to restore the Aravalli ecosystem by planting native tree species. The forest will act as the “heart and lung” of Delhi NCR, improving air quality and providing a serene environment for health and leisure. It supports India’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy.

Tree Plantation and Biodiversity

The project focuses on removing invasive species like Kabuli Kikar (Prosopis juliflora) and replacing them with native trees such as Bargad, Peepal, Neem, Dhak, and Aravalli-specific species like Dhauk and Khairi. The forest will feature themed groves including Bodhi Vatika, Bamboo Setum, Medicinal Plants Vatika, Butterfly Garden, and others. These groves will preserve local flora and support diverse fauna.

Community Participation and Facilities

Matri Van involves extensive community engagement through CSR initiatives, NGOs, and RWAs. Public facilities will include nature trails, cycle tracks, yoga spaces, gazebos, and water bodies to conserve water and prevent urban flooding. Irrigation will use treated water with misting and sprinkling systems to maintain greenery efficiently.

Alignment with National Missions

The initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), which advocates saving food, water, and energy, managing waste, banning single-use plastics, and promoting healthy lifestyles. It complements efforts to increase India’s renewable energy share, currently over 50%, and reduce carbon footprints in urban areas.

Future Prospects

Gurugram is set to become a model ‘Ideal Millennium City’ through such green initiatives. Matri Van will contribute to urban sustainability by mitigating pollution, enhancing biodiversity, and offering recreational spaces. It is expected to inspire other metro cities to adopt similar ecological restoration and conservation projects.
