India possesses a vast drainage network broadly classified into Himalayan and Peninsular river systems based on origin, regime, and evolutionary history. Himalayan rivers like the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra are perennial, fed by snowmelt and rainfall, and carve deep V-shaped valleys, gorges, and meanders across the northern plains. Peninsular rivers like the Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi, and Cauvery are non-perennial, rain-fed, and flow through older, graded valleys with balanced flow regimes. Understanding their origins, courses, left-bank and right-bank tributaries, and major drainage basins forms a core foundation for Indian geography.
Classification of Indian River Systems
Indian drainage systems are categorized using three main criteria: origin, discharge location, and drainage basin size.
Classification by Origin
- Himalayan Drainage: Antecedent rivers that existed prior to the uplift of the Himalayas, cutting deep gorges through the ranges.
- Peninsular Drainage: Consequent rivers that follow the general slope of the Peninsular plateau, maturing into broad, shallow valleys.
Classification by Discharge Location
- Arabian Sea Drainage: Receives nearly 23 percent of the country’s total surface run-off, including the Indus, Narmada, Tapi, Mahi, and Sabarmati.
- Bay of Bengal Drainage: Receives nearly 77 percent of the surface run-off, including the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Krishna, Mahanadi, and Cauvery.
The Indus River System
The Indus river system is one of the largest transboundary river basins in the world, covering a total length of 2,880 km, with 1,114 km flowing within India.
Origin and Course
- The Indus originates near Bokhar Chu glacier in the Kailash range near Lake Manasarovar in Tibet, where it is known as Singi Khamban (Lion’s mouth).
- It flows northwest through Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, entering Pakistan near Chillar in the Dardistan region.
- It passes between the Karakoram and Zanskar ranges and cuts a gorge through the Himalayas at Attock.
Key Tributaries
- Left-Bank Tributaries: Zanskar, Suru, Soan, Panjnad (consisting of the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej).
- Right-Bank Tributaries: Shyok, Nubra, Gilgit, Hunza, Kabul, Swat, Kurram, Tochi, and Gomal.
- Jhelum: Rises at Verinag spring in Jammu and Kashmir, flows through Wular Lake, and meets the Chenab at Trimmu in Pakistan.
- Chenab: Formed by the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers at Tandi in Himachal Pradesh; it is the largest tributary of the Indus.
- Ravi: Originates near the Rohtang Pass in the Kullu hills of Himachal Pradesh and flows between the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges.
- Beas: Originates from Beas Kund near Rohtang Pass, stays entirely within India, and meets the Sutlej at Harike in Punjab.

The Ganga River System

Panch Prayag and Main Stem
- The river forms from the confluence of the Bhagirathi (originating at Gaumukh, Gangotri glacier) and the Alaknanda (originating at Satopanth glacier) at Devprayag.
- Vishnuprayag: Confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga.
- Nandaprayag: Confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini/Nandakini.
- Karnaprayag: Confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar.

- Ghaghara: Rises in Mapchachungo glacier, Tibet, receiving tributaries like the Sharda (Saryu) and Rapti before joining Ganga at Chhapra.
- Gandak: Comprises two streams, Kaligandak and Trishulganga, originating near the Nepal-Tibet border, entering the plains at Triveni, and meeting the Ganga at Sonpur.

The Brahmaputra River System

- Travels 1,200 km eastward in Tibet under the name Yarlung Tsangpo.

- Joins the Dibang and Lohit rivers at Sadiya to form the main stem named Brahmaputra.
