Kochi Water Metro

PM Modi is all set to inaugurate the first phase of the Kochi Water Metro project in Kerala on April 25. The Kochi Water Metro project is said to revolutionize transportation in India as it is the country’s first-ever water metro system of its kind.

Linking Ten Island Communities in Kerala

The main objective of the Kochi Water Metro project is to link ten island communities in Kerala’s city with the mainland, resulting in shorter travel times and more cost-effective transportation. The project boasts a distinct infrastructure and has the capacity to carry over one lakh passengers. During the initial phase of the project, it is expected to transport more than 34,000 passengers. Upon the completion of the metro system, this number is predicted to rise significantly, reaching up to 1.5 lakhs of passengers daily.

Modern Ferry Transport Project

The Kochi Water Metro is a modern ferry transport project consisting of numerous boats running along 16 routes across Greater Kochi. Equipped with cutting-edge safety devices and advanced technology, the ferry ensures smoother commutes and more efficient travel experiences. The boats in the Kochi Water Metro are powered by batteries and require only 10 to 20 minutes to traverse each route. The incorporation of innovative technology enables smooth sailing even in adverse weather conditions.

38 Stations and 78 Ferry Boats

Upon the project’s completion, the system will feature a total of 38 stations and 78 ferry boats. The project has a total cost of Rs. 1137 crore, which is being financed by the Kerala state government and a German funding agency called KWF.
