Iranaitivu Island

Iranaitivu Island

Iranaitivu is an island belonging to Sri Lanka located in the Gulf of Mannar. It is located 300 km away from the country’s capital, Colombo. This remote island was recently chosen as the burial site for COVID-19 victims belonging to Islamic and Christian communities. The Sri Lankan government had previously forced minorities to cremate their dead. This is against the Islamic sentiments that prohibits cremation.
