Iran Allows Visa-Free Travel for Indians

Iran has recently become yet another country to launch visa-waiver programme allowing Indian citizens visa-free entry for up to 15 days. The decision was taken earlier, and the new rules provide welcomed access for Indian tourists.

Who Qualifies for Visa-Free Entry

The visa exemption applies only to Indian passport holders entering Iran by air. Citizens must be traveling for tourism purposes only, not for business or work. The waiver allows one visa-free visit within a 6-month period, with a maximum stay of 15 consecutive days. Visitors cannot extend their time once in Iran.

Four Conditions Travelers Must Meet

Iran has outlined four key conditions Indian tourists must meet to enter without a traditional tourist visa:

  1. Hold an Ordinary (not diplomatic) Passport
  2. Arrive in Iran by Air Transportation
  3. Stay for Tourism Purposes Only
  4. Limit Visit to 15 Days, Once Every 6 Months

Those looking to enter Iran more than once in a 6-month span or remain longer than 15 days must obtain the appropriate visa in advance through an Iranian consulate.

However, this visa exemption does not extend to those traveling for other reasons, such as work or study.

Reason for Relaxation of Visa Requirements

The visa requirement relaxation was announced in December 2023 and includes India along with 32 other countries. The objective is to boost tourism and attract more visitors worldwide.

Other Countries Offering Visa-Free Travel to Indians

Currently, around 27 countries provide visa-free entry to Indian citizens, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Kenya, Indonesia, Barbados, Bhutan, Dominica, Haiti, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Samoa, and Trinidad and Tobago, among others.
