IOC Confirms India Among Seven 2036 Olympic Bidders

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed India among seven countries in discussions for hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics. The other countries in the process are Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Germany, Hungary, and Turkey.

2036 Olympic Host Selection Process

The IOC plans to choose the host city for the 2036 Olympics in 2029 through a vote by its 100-plus members. The IOC has fixed 31 October 2026 as the deadline for other national Olympic bodies to enter the bidding process.

India’s Bid Plan and Ahmedabad

India’s proposed bid is centred on Ahmedabad, a city in Gujarat. Ahmedabad is also scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has the Narendra Modi Stadium, which is the world’s largest cricket stadium.

IOC Dialogue Phases and Timeline

The IOC Executive Board is scheduled to shortlist interested parties in March 2027 for the Strategic Dialogue phase. This phase includes the Future Host Questionnaire and core legal and financial guarantees. A Targeted Dialogue with selected Preferred Hosts is expected to begin in December 2028 before the final election in mid-2029.
