IOA Launches National Olympic Education Programme
The Indian Olympic Association has unveiled two major institutional reforms aimed at strengthening India’s Olympic ecosystem, with the launch of the National Olympic Education and Development Programme and the formal reactivation of the National Olympic Academy. The initiatives signal a renewed emphasis on athlete-centric development, Olympic values, and long-term capacity building within Indian sport.
Key Decisions Taken in Ahmedabad
The decisions were taken at the Executive Council meeting of the Indian Olympic Association on January 8 and were unanimously endorsed by the IOA General House during its Annual General Meeting on January 9. Both meetings were held in Ahmedabad. According to the IOA, the reforms are aligned with global best practices in Olympic education and governance.
National Olympic Education and Development Programme
The National Olympic Education and Development Programme (NOEDP) is a comprehensive national framework designed to deliver structured education and development initiatives across the Olympic ecosystem. It will be implemented in collaboration with National Sports Federations and State Olympic Associations to ensure outreach from the grassroots to elite levels. The programme focuses on embedding Olympic values, ethics, and professionalism while supporting holistic athlete development, welfare, and career transition beyond competitive sport.
Revival and Role of National Olympic Academy
As a core pillar of NOEDP, the National Olympic Academy has been reactivated to function as India’s central institution for Olympic education, research, and dialogue. Beyond its academic mandate, the Academy will work directly with athletes to support education, leadership development, and a deeper understanding of the Olympic movement throughout their careers. The IOA General House approved P. T. Usha, President of the IOA, as President of the National Olympic Academy, and Gagan Narang, IOA Vice President, as its Director.
