Indore Awarded IGBC Green City Platinum Certification

Indore has emerged as a leading example of sustainable urban development in India. Recently, it became the first city in Madhya Pradesh and one of only three cities in the country to receive the prestigious CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green City Platinum Certification. This certification recognises excellence in environmental management and green urban planning.

IGBC Green City Certification

The IGBC Green City Certification is a rigorous evaluation system developed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). It assesses cities on multiple sustainability parameters. These include water and energy conservation, solid waste management, green cover expansion, e-governance, and policy frameworks. The certification aims to promote sustainable living and eco-friendly urban growth.

Evaluation Process and Criteria

Indore underwent a detailed six-month evaluation by IGBC experts. The city submitted extensive data on more than a dozen parameters. The assessment focused on the city’s master planning efforts, resource management, and innovative governance. Indore’s initiatives in cleanliness, air quality improvement, and liveability were also key factors. The comprehensive review ensured only the most committed cities earned the Platinum rating.

Indore’s Achievements and Strengths

Indore excelled in water management by implementing efficient usage and recycling methods. Its solid waste management system is advanced, focusing on segregation and reduction of landfill waste. The city’s e-governance initiatives have improved transparency and citizen participation. Indore also expanded its green cover, planting trees and creating parks to enhance urban biodiversity. These efforts combined to create a sustainable and future-ready urban environment.

Significance of the Award

Indore’s recognition places it among an elite group of 32 cities and zones in India with IGBC Platinum status. It joins Rajkot, Pune, and Pimpri Chinchwad as Platinum-certified cities. This award marks Madhya Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable development. Indore serves as a model for other cities aiming to balance growth with environmental responsibility. The achievement also reflects India’s growing focus on green building and urban sustainability.

IGBC’s Role in Promoting Green Buildings

Since its inception, IGBC has certified over 16,300 projects in India. These projects cover more than 14.15 billion square feet of green building space. Nearly 90% of green building projects in India follow IGBC’s rating systems. This widespread adoption makes IGBC the most credible framework for sustainable urban development in the country.
