Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Ship Ajay

The Indian Navy marked a key milestone with the launch of Yard 3034 Ajay, the eighth and final ship of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series. Built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, this launch reinforces India’s push for self-reliance in defence shipbuilding under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Launch Event and Significance
Yard 3034 Ajay was launched on 21 July 2025 at GRSE’s Kolkata yard. The event was graced by Vice Admiral Kiran Deshmukh, Chief of Materiel, and Mrs Priya Deshmukh, who ceremonially launched the ship. Senior officials from the Indian Navy and GRSE attended. The launch comes shortly after the commissioning of the first ship of the class, INS Arnala, on 18 June 2025. The second ship, INS Androth, is ready for delivery following successful sea trials.
Design and Indigenous Content
Ajay is designed and built entirely in India, with over 80% indigenous content. This reflects the Government of India’s focus on Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat policies in defence manufacturing. GRSE, the government-owned shipbuilder, continues its legacy from 1961 when it delivered INS Ajay, India’s first indigenously built warship, setting the foundation for domestic naval shipbuilding.
Capabilities and Role
The ship enhances the Indian Navy’s underwater domain awareness and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. It is equipped with advanced sensors including a hull-mounted sonar and a Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar (LFVDS). Its weapon systems include state-of-the-art torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, the NSG-30 gun, and a 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote Controlled Gun (SRCG). These features enable the ship to perform mine laying and shallow water anti-submarine operations effectively.
Propulsion and Technology
Powered by diesel engines, Ajay uses waterjet propulsion for superior manoeuvrability in shallow waters. The combination of diesel power and waterjets supports high speed and agility needed for ASW operations close to coastlines and in littoral zones. The ship also incorporates advanced communication and electronic warfare systems, contributing to its role in securing India’s maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
Strategic Importance
The launch of Ajay is a strategic boost for the Indian Navy’s coastal defence and underwater warfare capabilities. It strengthens India’s ability to monitor and counter submarine threats and maintain maritime security. The indigenous design and construction demonstrate India’s growing technological competence and commitment to defence self-sufficiency.
