Indian Railways Approves Danapur–Fatuha Multitracking Project

Indian Railways approved a ₹976 crore multitracking project for the 29 km Danapur–Fatuha section of the East Central Railway in Bihar on 1 August 2026. The project covers line capacity expansion on the Patna rail corridor and includes third and fourth railway lines on selected stretches between Danapur, Patna, Rajendra Nagar, Patna Saheb and Fatuha.

Multitracking in Indian Railways

Multitracking refers to the addition of extra railway lines on an existing route. Indian Railways uses this method on congested corridors to separate train movements, reduce conflicts between passenger and freight services, and increase line capacity.

Project Scope and Route Sections

The approved work includes third and fourth lines between Danapur and Patna, a third line between Rajendra Nagar and Patna Saheb, and third and fourth lines between Patna Saheb and Fatuha. The 29 km stretch lies in Bihar and forms part of the busy rail network around Patna.

Capacity and Freight Linkages

In the first year of operation, the project is expected to support 22 additional passenger trains and 18 additional freight trains daily. It is also projected to enable movement of an additional 5.2 million tonnes of freight annually.
