Indian Navy and EUNAVFOR Joint Naval Exercise

The Indian Navy is set to conduct a joint naval exercise with the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR). This exercise will involve ships and aircraft from both sides. It aims to enhance interoperability and combat non-traditional maritime threats. The collaboration is step towards reinforcing maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

Background of the Collaboration

The joint exercise follows a port visit by the Spanish frigate ESPS Reina Sofia and the Italian frigate ITS Antonio Marceglia to Mumbai. This visit marked the first of its kind under the European Union’s aegis. It marks the ongoing discussions between Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and EU President Ursula von der Leyen about international peace and security.

Key Participants

The exercise will feature the Spanish frigate ESPS Reina Sofia, commanded by Commander Salvador Moreno Regil, and the Italian frigate ITS Antonio Marceglia, led by Commander Alberto Bartolomeo. The EUNAVFOR delegation was led by Rear Admiral Davide Da Pozzo.

Objectives of the Exercise

The primary goals of the exercise include improving tactical coordination and enhancing operational readiness. The exercises will focus on combating piracy, smuggling, and other non-traditional threats in the Indian Ocean. The joint operations will facilitate seamless collaboration in future deployments.

Engagement Activities

During their port stay, both naval forces engaged in Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs) and a Table Top Exercise (TTX). These activities were designed to improve tactical-level coordination at sea. The insights gained from these engagements will be beneficial for both navies in combating maritime threats.

Maritime Security Dialogue

The ongoing collaboration reflects the outcomes of the 4th India-EU Maritime Security Dialogue held in March 2025. Both parties have expressed a commitment to a rules-based maritime order. This includes endorsing free and open international waters while respecting territorial sovereignty.

Future Implications

The joint exercise is expected to deepen multi-domain cooperation between India and the European Union. It puts stress on a mutual interest in protecting lawful trade and countering illegal activities at sea. Enhanced military cooperation will likely lead to stronger strategic ties in the region.
