Indian Coast Guard Ship Akshar Commissioned 2025

The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Akshar was commissioned on 4 October 2025 at Karaikal, Puducherry. It is the second vessel in the Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) series. Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, Akshar reflects India’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The ship strengthens India’s maritime security and surveillance capabilities along the eastern seaboard.
Design and Indigenous Content
ICGS Akshar is a 51-metre-long patrol vessel with over 60% indigenous components. It displaces approximately 320 tons. The ship’s design focuses on speed, endurance, and operational flexibility. Indigenous technology is evident in its propulsion, weaponry, and onboard systems, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Propulsion and Performance
The ship is powered by two 3,000 KW diesel engines. These engines drive two Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) and gearboxes developed indigenously. The vessel can reach speeds up to 27 knots and has an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles at economical speed. The CPP system enhances manoeuvrability and operational efficiency in diverse maritime conditions.
Armament and Combat Systems
ICGS Akshar is equipped with a 30 mm CRN 91 gun and two 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCG). These weapons are integrated with advanced fire-control systems. The armament enables the ship to undertake surveillance, interdiction, and maritime law enforcement effectively.
Advanced Onboard Systems
The vessel features an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and Automated Power Management System (APMS). These systems automate navigation, power, and platform management. This automation reduces crew workload and increases operational safety and efficiency.
Operational Deployment
ICGS Akshar will be based at Karaikal, Puducherry. It operates under the administrative control of Commander Coast Guard Region (East) and Commander Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 13. The ship’s primary roles include maritime zone surveillance, search and rescue, pollution control, and enforcement of maritime laws.
Symbolism and Significance
The name ‘Akshar’ means ‘imperishable’. It symbolises the Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to securing India’s maritime interests. The ship embodies India’s strategic focus on enhancing coastal security and maritime domain awareness through indigenous innovation.
