India-Malta Talks Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

India and Malta held the fourth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Valletta on 27 March 2026, reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations and identifying new avenues for cooperation. During the visit, Sibi George also met Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ian Borg, where both sides reviewed ongoing cooperation and explored ways to further strengthen bilateral ties. These engagements underline the increasing frequency of high-level exchanges between the two countries.

Expanding Defence and Strategic Cooperation

In addition to diplomatic talks, discussions were held with Brigadier Clinton J O’Neill to enhance defence and security collaboration. Both sides explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in maritime security and strategic affairs. Given Malta’s location in the Mediterranean, such engagement holds significance for India’s broader outreach to Europe and maritime partnerships.

Focus on Trade, Technology and Economic Growth

A major focus of the consultations was on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, tourism, technology and innovation, maritime affairs, and education. Both countries also explored strengthening economic ties in the context of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement. Key sectors identified for collaboration included information and communication technology (ICT), healthcare, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and education, indicating a forward-looking economic partnership.
